I wish I had an angel friend
January 17, 2007
I wish I had an angel friend
to watch over your tiny travels –
to walk with you through wander worlds
of daisy, stream, and meadow.
I wish to have an angel friend
when it becomes your time
to go exploring on your own
to catch you if too high you climb
above this grownup world of pace
too fast to see my child’s face.

Almost seems you’re channeling Shel Silverstein (that would be a compliment in my book).

thank you Howard! As long as I’m not channeling Shelly Winters (God rest her soul). No, really, thank you.

How beautifully you convey the hopes of any parent to provide protection as they watch their child explore and grow.

If there are angels I believe every child has one because they are nature (or God’s if you so chose) greatest creation.

Dear Howard, bullish, Naughty, z-freek, annielf, and Bice:
Thank you for the comments and compliments on the poem. I am blessed to have you as readers. I wrote this for my first child when she was one.
Once we sign on (or trip into) being a parent, we commit to a lifetime of worry. It is not the only dimension of parent reality, but it certainly is a major negative – subjectively speaking. However, it is also that “worry” which makes the bond so special, so cohering, so adaptive. I can remember driving home from the birthing hospital for the first time as a nuclear family unit thinking “holy crap, what have we done! This sweet little bundle of protoplasm is totally dependent on me!”
peace
