brushing flies away
let me hold you in my arms
cool your tortured brow

Noah

January 13, 2007

Noah was the last to go.
Discovered face down
hands still clenched
from the struggle for air.

Siblings Luke, then Paul
then John, then Mary
coaxed down the hallway,
into the tub
one at a time

each head held under
until bubbles
turned to silence.

In the end no frantic prayers answered.
No angel made Mommy stop.

on the outside looking in

January 11, 2007

you never look in
at me
i often look in
at you

you have
those things
i am told
bring happiness

i have
those things
i am told
bring shame

i look into
your
restaurant

you spend
my week’s wages
in a night

so elegant
so white

table cloths
and candles
fine wines
and waiters

I could go on
and on…

but i have been ordered
to move along…

what the HELL does that mean!!??

QUESTION AUTHORITY!!??

YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!

But Dad…

WHAT IF THE MEN ON D-DAY
QUESTIONED AUTHORITY!!??

OR THE SOLDIERS FIGHTING THE INDIANS
QUESTIONED AUTHORITY!!??

or the Hitler Youth,
or the Conquistadors,
or the Crusaders,

or the…

“SMACK” the big open hand hit his young face with a single head turning blow.

GO TO YOUR ROOM – MISTER QUESTION AUTHORITY!!!
AND THROW THAT FUCKING BUTTON IN THE GARBAGE NOW!!!

To have no care of wrong or right
have no thoughts but decree,
soar and see as a hawk in flight.

Fly from dark into light
hold no sense of history
to have no care of wrong or right.

Wire your brain to plumes that fright,
know only what you need to be;
soar and see as a hawk in flight.

See the red as black and white,
kill then eat the flesh, be free
to have no care of wrong or right.

Practice not duty nor requite.
Call hemic cries of victory.
Soar and see as a hawk in flight.

Have no pretense but your might
Take no knowledge from the tree.
To have no care of wrong or right,
soar and see as a hawk in flight.

your choice

January 5, 2007

if you believe you are alone –
you are always alone

if you believe in guidance –
it is everywhere

in the sock drawer
the shower spray
the daily news
a child born gay

I grab some toast
I gobble fast
I’m in the car
to work at last

parched from breakfast
swish swig of joe
to scheduled class
quickly I go

back of classroom
blackened faces
rows and rows of
burned-out races

after class,
get more joe
think I see god
in starbucks’ logo

So I pray
unto my coffee.
Will this help,
me in my coffin?

he listens,
i hope for the best,
if i have his ear,
what of the rest?

I can only tell you
what to think

not what I think.

I only know
what I am told

not how to know.
