Yes, I believe an insult is not only a threatening act but also it is an act of humiliation and therefore the revenge motive becomes paramount. Self defense. Revenge. Economic despair. There are many other motivations of enemies but I think these are among the top.

the greater the perceived threat
the greater the anxiety
the greater the tunnel vision
it is how the body works
and countries work like bodies
when threatened: fight or flight (isolationism)
