When I was in college (long long ago), any announcement we posted around campus always had a big bold header stating either “SEX” or “BEER”. It helped our message to stand out. Of course we were a fraternity and we were very sophomoric. However, I don’t think advertising has evolved much beyond that paradigm. And that is what mass entertainment is all about – advertising.
Where does blood lust come from? I don’t understand it. I was born in a rough neighborhood in Jersey City. When I was little I saw a guy stab another guy in the eye. That was enough blood for me. I now live in an area that has a minor league hockey franchise. Middle class white families flock to the games in their team outfits hoping to see a fight or two. I have been to four games and in three there was blood and the crowd loooooved it. I doubt if many have ever been the recipient of a hard punch to the face. I have and never enjoyed it.
Peace
and thank you for commenting!

Wow, that explains a lot. Thanks for the peek into the motivation. Ahhh Rome, we still must have our Gladiators and blood sports, Sigh Sorry, I don’t get it either, it cheapens life so much…

Of course, as long as people believe in things (anything: religion, country, honor, the “right” to have better stuff than the next guy, the list goes on) they will probably always fight over it. There are so many powerful motivators, some not always overt. However, none of these facts will stop me from abhorring war and violence in all of its forms.

Right on
doc – like the new look. Your comment occasioned me to recall the movie “The Gods Must Be Crazy”.
