I wish I had an angel friend
to watch over your tiny travels –
to walk with you through wander worlds
of daisy, stream, and meadow.

I wish to have an angel friend
when it becomes your time
to go exploring on your own

to catch you if too high you climb
above this grownup world of pace

too fast to see my child’s face.

dad wore hats

August 30, 2006

not when he should have

on a cold bright day
he would yell to us
where is your hat?
while the wind played
in his hair.

nor the way he should have

it was always
crunched atop his head
by a nephew or daughter
running around our backyard
at a picnic.

nor what he should have

into the dewy night
the adults would sing
heads touching in harmony
dad smoking a Chesterfield
wearing a bonnet.

A Mom Like You

May 13, 2006

The world needs
more moms
like you.

A mother to speak softly
about how special
a child is.

A mom to look up to
and feel sure about.

I wish I could send you
to those
who need a mom
like you;
to embrace them
in fragrant warmth
while you sing away
the loneliness.

Eternity smiles

May 5, 2006

On a cold still night
moon lights the room.

I hold her upon my lap
a  warm tiny bundle.

Her dark eyes
search this space

as we rock in time
with the universe…
