Aristoscale vs humanscale – a participatory poem by Christine, Jak, Qazse, and Z-freek
December 9, 2007
what if
we stopped
building mansions
what if
we began
to build ourselves.
our home
in our hearts
freedom
our home
in each other
humanity
our home
in love compassion
reality
on the outside looking in

You never look
at me.
I often look
at you.
You have
those things
I am told
bring happiness.
I have
those things
I am told
bring shame.
I look into
the restaurant –
you spend
my week’s wages
in a night
so elegant
so white
table cloths
and candles
fine wines
and waiters.
I could go on
and on,
but I have been ordered
to move along…
dying for Christmas version 1

The tree we cut
and carried
into our home
the one
we shackled
trimmed
sang to
and toasted
(rip a suckling child
from its mother)
(put makeup on a statue)
(be happy at a rape)
now lies on
its side
in the gutter
alone
with hooks
and tinsel
blowing in the wind

I
will
be gifting
a few six packs
of this festive beer.
Please buy yourself one
as a gift from me!
Happy Holidays!

One week later…
November 29, 2007
I spin the can
of mixed nuts
peering into a greasy
kaleidoscope –
not a cashew
to be found
only jordans,
filberts, and peas
tumbling
in my disdain.
They are all
that remain
of the feast.
