On the Outside Looking In

December 21, 2008

You never look
at me.
I often look
at you.

You have
those things
I am told
bring happiness.

I have
those things
I am told
bring shame.

I look into
your restaurant –

you spend
my week’s wages
in a night

so elegant
so white

table cloths
and candles
fine wine
and waiters.

I could go on
and on,

but I have been ordered
to move along…

peace is a choice
do not wait for one’s embrace

When I Become Santa

December 4, 2008

We move operations south:
to Newark, Watts, Bronx
East LA and ten thousand
other desperate places.

We will make toys
for souls.

Peaceful and playful
thoughtful and titillating toys.

Unafraid and knowing –
we will walk this earth

giving gifts.

The tree we cut
and carried
into our home

the one
we shackled
then
trimmed

sang to
then
toasted

now lies
in the gutter

her
hooks
and tinsel
riffling on the wind

Strobe your masses
with the seen and unseen.

Feed them “must watch”
“must play” content.

Imply jobs
are supposed to suck.

Live for the weekend.

Cast excessive living
as ultimate meaning.

Declare it unpatriotic or uncool
to think otherwise.

Render freedom irrelevant.

one week later…

November 29, 2008

I spin the can
of mixed nuts
peering into its greasy
kaleidoscope –

not a cashew
to be found

only jordans,
filberts, and peas
tumbling
in my disdain.

They are all
that remain

of the feast.
